If you’re running an SME and looking at HubSpot’s pricing right now, you’re probably doing the maths.
The jump from free to functional runs into hundreds or even thousands of pounds a month before you’ve unlocked the features that actually matter. So “build your own” starts to sound like the obvious answer. Just use a workflow automation tool and an AI API. You can assemble your own stack for a fraction of the cost. The tools are all there. Technically, that’s true.
But what that conversation consistently skips is that assembling your own agentic stack is not as straightforward as the tutorials make it look. Someone has to build it. Someone has to maintain it. Every integration is a potential failure point. And the data quality requirements are identical.
The smarter move for most SMEs right now is neither.
A lightweight CRM for pipeline management, with targeted automation and AI handling the repetitive work on top, gets you most of the value at a fraction of the cost, without betting the whole operation on a homegrown stack that needs constant care.
Don’t throw out the SaaS model entirely because the pricing is broken. The pricing is broken. But the answer is a smarter hybrid, not a DIY rebuild from scratch.
The one thing that doesn’t change regardless of route: the processes being automated need to be clearly defined before any tool touches them. That’s the condition that makes any of this work, build, buy, or hybrid.
